Meet Jack, one of our engineering apprentices

What inspired you to choose this specific apprenticeship program?
I don’t come from an engineering background and I didn’t have previous training in related subjects before starting my apprenticeship. I was self employed as a Jewellery Manufacturer which gave me my skills in working with my hands and tackling problems creatively. This inspired me to start this apprenticeship as it gave me the ability to gain experience working as an engineer, working with my hands as well as allowing me to re-train in a field that has more career growth and future prospects.
How did you first learn about this career path, and what attracted you to it?
With this job being very niche, I only learnt about this career path when I came across the advert for the apprenticeship. I was immediately attracted to it as it gave me the opportunity to re train in the field of engineering whilst also gaining hands on jointing experience and also giving the opportunity to work offshore on one of the maintenance vessels.
What skills or interests did you have that made you feel this career path was the right fit?
As I mentioned before I have always liked problem solving, fixing things, learning how things work and practical working.
What does a typical day in the life of an Engineering Apprentice involve at Global Marine Group?
My day to day work varies massively depending on what we have on. I work in the test facility so we qualify and test customers cable samples before they go on the ships. I also do some cable jointing as well which I also really enjoy.

What do you love most about your role at Global Marine Group?
I like the fact that no two days are the same. One day we will be outside testing in the yard the next day we will be inside building a joint ready for testing. I also like the practical working aspect and finding solutions to problems we encounter.
What advice would you give someone who would want to pursue a career in Engineering?
If you are someone who isn’t afraid to get stuck in and enjoys working with your hands and problem solving then I would highly recommend pursuing a job in marine engineering.
What aspects of this career excite or motivate you the most?
The idea that I am training in a niche role that will open up opportunities for me in the future either working offshore on a vessel or working in the test facility.
How do you feel this apprenticeship will prepare you for the challenges in your chosen field?
Eventually I would like to go and work offshore on one of the ships. This apprenticeship teaches me everything I need to know about jointing and working offshore which will be beneficial in the future.
