Meet Shaun, one of our original graduates

Hello, I’m Shaun Atkinson, currently the Project Engineering Manager at the Global Marine Group. I’m predominantly based in Chelmsford with frequent travel to other Global Marine offices and vessels. After completing my Marine Engineering degree and gaining experience in the maritime world, I joined Global Marine’s Graduate Programme, moving around the business and soaking up the knowledge. Fast forward to today, I am thrilled to lead engineering projects in a role that keeps me on my toes each and every day.

What attracted you to this company as a graduate?

Global Marine caught my eye with its reputation in marine and subsea cable engineering and the variety of experiences it offers. The chance to explore different areas of the business as a graduate felt like a treasure trove of opportunities, which allowed me to apply my technical knowledge while gaining a well-rounded understanding of the industry. I was drawn to the idea of working on real-world projects, making an impact, and learning from some of the best minds in the industry.

What’s a typical day like in your role?

Dynamic and fast-paced, no two days are the same. Picture a ship navigating through ever-changing seas – that’s my typical day! From overseeing engineering projects to collaborating with teams and solving technical challenges, every day brings a mix of challenges and achievements. I work in a constantly changing environment, so problem-solving and adaptability is key, there’s never a dull moment. I also spend time mentoring and supporting the engineers on my team to help them grow and succeed. It’s like starring in my own engineering adventure, full of twists, learning opportunities and accomplishments!

How have you developed professionally since joining?

Oh, where do I start? Since joining Global Marine, I’ve deepened my technical expertise, working towards my Engineering Chartership and developed strong project management and leadership skills. Rotating through different roles was like trying on various hats, each teaching me something new and providing a well-rounded foundation. I’ve learned how to juggle complex projects, communicate effectively, and lead a team with confidence. It’s been a whirlwind journey of growth, and one I wouldn’t trade for anything else.

What are some of the most valuable skills you have learned?

Adaptability, problem-solving, and leadership top the list. I’ve learned to think on my feet and approach challenges with a “let’s solve this!” attitude, often having to think quickly and creatively to resolve challenges in high-pressure environments. Communication has been crucial – engineering might be technical, but it’s all about people too. Leadership and team management has also been significant, as I now oversee a team and ensure everyone is aligned on project goals and maintaining collaboration throughout projects.

What do you enjoy most about working here?

The variety and the constant challenges. No two days are the same, and I’m constantly learning something new, whether it’s through new technology, projects, or working with diverse teams. Global Marine Group fosters a strong collaborative culture, where ideas are encouraged and valued, and learning is endless. Plus, the dynamic nature of the work and the fast-paced environment makes it exciting.

What career development opportunities have been offered to you?

The career development opportunities at Global Marine Group are endless. From the start, I was given the chance to rotate through different departments, uncovering my strengths and passions. I’ve gained industry certifications, attended specialised training sessions, and received focused mentoring. The company actively invests in its people, whether it’s through workshops or hands-on technical experience. Each role I’ve taken on has been a stepping stone, preparing me for the next big challenge, building new skills and developing new perspectives for the challenges ahead.
